Somatic Experiencing

Developed over decades of research and clinical experience Somatic Experiencing was founded by Dr Peter Levine more than 50 years ago as a gentle, natural and effective strategy to prevent and heal from trauma. Since then it has grown to be endorsed by doctors, psychologists and psychotherapists and is taught in over 40 countries around the world as specialist trauma training. Read more below:

What is it all about?

Somatic Experiencing is rooted in biological survival physiology which itself is backed up by the latests research and understanding in the field of neuroscience, biology and psychology. It is well documented, and has been my professional experience that treatment leaves clients feeling more alive, more in control of their futures, more resilient in the face of new stressors and importantly no longer haunted by the emotional scars of their trauma. 

This body focussed modality is integrated naturally into how I work and simply means that we begin to be aware of not just how you perceive your feelings in your head, but where you feel them in your body.  Tightness in the chest or noticing your breathing becoming shallow or your heart rate increasing.  By bringing awareness to these changes, and learning to sit with them, our bodies learn that they can feel safe, and no longer overwhelmed. this is the beginning of allowing the body and mind to process what has happened.
